First impressions of the new Voigtlander 65mm f2 APO Lanthar lens are ‘oh my goodness’. I’ve taken a handful of frames and nothing serious, but this looks like a very interesting addition to the Sony FE lens family. Every now and again Voigtlander produces something that really is breathtaking. The Voigtlander 35mm f1.2 II was one such lens. The 65mm f2 APO Lanthar looks to be another. I don’t own any macro lenses for any of my current ‘in use’ bodies. My gut suggested that this lens would be much better value than the Sony 50mm f2.8 Macro and could be another 35mm f1.2 II….
The reviews online speak highly of the new 65mm APO Lanthar, although it is likely to remain a niche lens. It is ‘only’ a 1:2 magnification lens. It has no AF and is an old school lump of metal. However, it is APO, which means very well controlled to non-existent CA and tests suggest it is a lot more than just a macro lens. Ten shots are not much and I hope I won’t eat my words, but this lens seems to be staggeringly good. It helps that build and finish appear to be what we’d expect from Leica (ditto 35 f1.2 II).
I’ll come back to this in due course. And the A7R III.
