The 28 f2.8s vs. Sony 28-70 OSS
Summary: There is little between the 28-70 Kit zoom at this aperture, if you look at where it does well. If you get a good copy, the kit lens is pretty darned good at landscape apertures, especially at the wider settings. However, as I scan around the frame I can find zones of reduced sharpness which really do diminish the overall assessment of consistent sharpness (look at the CA samples showing the white gate above, which is a good example). Were I to choose between the zoom and the FDn 28 f2.8 for serious work, the prime would be my choice every time. It is the better lens. In Part 3, I will show results from the 35mm and 50mm lenses. You’ll find out how the 35mm Zeiss FE fares against the humble 35mm f2.8 FDn and how the 50mm f1.4 FDn compares to the Zuiko OM 50 f3.5 Macro at distance. I also threw the 28-70 kit zoom into the mix at both settings. If you are thinking of buying this zoom to replace primes, this is a must read….
