f2 Centre crops: note how darned good that Canon is on centre! This is a very impressive performance and I am quite confident my Zeiss ZM Planar cannot match that at f2…. Is there a difference? Well, inspecting my files in LR rather than these compressed web images I would say, yes, there is. Is it significant? No it is not. That Canon is blistering!
f2 Left edge crops. OK, there is a bit of a difference. The Canon is a touch ‘glowy’ in the outer margins, but its still mightily impressive.
Now we’re going to jump past f2.8 and f4 and see what happens at f5.6. On centre there is nothing between them.
Out towards the left edge, the Zeiss 55m is a touch more ‘solid’. Its hard to explain. It is a touch sharper, contrast does not seem to suffer right out at the edges, where it does with the Canon. Don’t forget, this is a 100% and the Canon is giving the Zeiss a hell of a run for its money.
